A friend of mine asked me what I knew about the various GPS speedometers that are on the market. I had to admit....Not Much. They sound like a great idea. No worry about tire size and gear ratios to deal with and they should be an easy install but what about reliability and accuracy? I know that on my GPS map device it sometimes takes a few minutes to locate the satellites when I first turn it on and it would seem that they might be subject to interference in some areas or affected by weather conditions. Does anyone have experience with these units?

Don't have one...but a couple of buddies have them and love them. They got tired of following each other down the road attempting to calibrate speedos.

I have a friend that has a link on his phone, and a place to mount it on his plymouth dash. I think he is just to cheap to fix his speedo.

I don't know of anyone that has one in a car, but I do have a couple buddies that have them on boats. They like them a lot, but the only down fall is sometimes they lag. Other than that no issues.

I have one in my lowrider truck and it plugs into the cigaret lighter. Its the best as far as i am concerned Its a garmin. It gives the exact mph it gives trip time average time top speed.The reason i have one is not mainly for the truck its for my boat.You see i trout fish alot out in lake ontario and i want to be in the 1.5 to 3.2 mph and down 100 feet so now it doesnt mater if i am going into the wind or with the wind i can know just how fast i am going .So one day i took it out of the boat and put it in the truck i was speeding by 7 mph and didnt know it because of the size of tires i was running. I did get pulled over by the law and the officer asked me how fast i was going i told him to the point how fast i was going and so i showed him He said have a good day and i was on my way.So all i can say to that is i must have told him exactly what he had on his radar gun.I also told him i used it for fishing and he said that sounded like a great idea. mooseman

Atmospheric weather will not affect a properly installed GPS system. The Loran system was not good at all in snow. The signal would would just disappear. That might be where people get the idea that it does the same thing to gps
Solar wind caused by sunspots can throw off the accuracy when at northern or southern latitudes.
The military May jam it for its purpose but it's usually local in nature. Followed by some serious ass kicking.
For our subject of speedos I think it's a great idea. The only problem might be finding a spot to mount the antenna. From what I have seen with a handheld gps with a external antenna is that the signal will go thru glass or plexiglass, but not metal. Wipers can interrupt the signal as well.
