Title: Philadelphia Modifiers Drags at ATCO
Post by: chopper526 on October 16, 2013, 06:20:47 PM
Two weekends ago I went to the drags at ATCO sponsored by the Philadelphia Modifiers. It was great! We made it a family outing, wife and three of my boys.  I hadn't been to the drags in over 30 years. The weather was great. Huge car show and flee market. First time any of my boys saw drag racing and they all want to go back. I took my '32, it's about 35 miles from my house. On my way there, I didn't know it, but one of the bolts for the alternator bracket snapped off in the block (that's what I get for using the un-graded bolts that came with the bracket). I realized it when I went to leave. I limped home although the alternator bracket was rubbing on the vibration dampner the whole way. I was driving "white Knuckles" waiting for something else to go wrong. I guess I'm just shaking out the bugs :'(

Glad you got it home safe.  Sounds like a fun time with the family.  Any pictures of the event?

Chopper,
I can understand that after 30 years going back to the drags made you feel like a kid again so you were too busy looking at all the cool cars to take pictures.  You're lucky though, Moose doesn't give too many "Free Passes"!

I took me two months to get to it, but during the Christmas break I was able to sneak away some time in the garage and fix my alternator bracket. I had to take everything off of the front end (radiator, fan, balance pulley) so I could get to the bolt that broke off in the block. Then I was able to drill the bolt and use an easy-out to get the bolt out. I then replaced the bolts that came with the bracket with GRADE 8 bolts (something I should have done the first time around). Then, instead of bolting the pieces of the bracket back in, I welded all the pieces together. I cleaned it up, painted it and the last thing I did when I installed the alternator was to add one additional metal stap from the block to the bracket. It looks great and more importantly....it is ROCK SOLID.
The car will fall apart before that bracket breaks :)
