Title: TV or Music in your Shop?
Post by: sixball on January 11, 2015, 01:30:43 PM
Do any of you have a TV or CD player in the shop to keep you company or do just enjoy the time away? I seem to need the background noise and that may be one reason I don't get out here as much as I should. Hammering, grinding, and cussing doesn't seem to do the same thing. ::)

I don't know how many of you remember back in the late 70's there was a company called Heathkit that marketed high end electronic kits that you could build. At the time I was studying electronics and the then new gadgets called integrated solid state circuits.  I figured one way to become more familiar with how these thing worked in actual practice would to build something so I bought one of Heathkit's high end stereo kits. At the time it was state of the art with led readout and 250 watts per channel which even by today's standards ain't bad. When I opened the box all I saw was bag after bag of electronic components. It took me a couple of months to figure it out and build all of the various circuits but it was well worth it and still is able to shake the work shop pretty well if you want to crank it up but I find in my later years I don't need quite as much volume as I used to....Oh by the way if you wondering about the cartoon it was drawn by a customer who was waiting for his Cadillac to be service at a dealership that I ran way back when. He was an artist and would draw to pass the time while he waited waiting.

I have nice, loud stereo, but I don't crank it anymore and get bored with the music. I shut it off after a short while. I also have a small tv at the front of the shop and once in awhile I like to find an old black and white movie just to glance at ever so often. I did put a dvd player out there awhile back to watch some old hotrod movies, but I never got anything done.

Moose those Heath kits were top notch, I built my first one in '75. It was one of their stereo amp kits. They were every bit the quality of the Zenith's of the day. Built all kinds of their kits, strobe lights etc.

I've got the tv for breaks, and  stereo for working. Dad always had the old crying country/western playing at the shop, it made me work slow. He would go to coffee and I would change station to the rock n roll. He would come back and not notice it untill he found himself working really fast, then he would chew my butt and make me change it back.lol
Yep, I have got to have back ground music on, and loud enough to hear above the grindeer. Different tunes for different types of work though. Lately i've been plugging my phone in on Creedence Clearwater Radio, good universal work music.
The otherday my neighbor across the street called to request a song, I might have had it up a little too much that day. ;D

It's the 60s I don't remember.  :)  But I do understand the lots of little bags full of tiny electronic thingies.

no TV in garage, but I do have a boom box with lots of base that has radio or CD's.

Currently playing is the latest out by ac/dc.  Will play it over and over till I don't want to hear it for a year.

I used to have my inside house unit an ONKYO 6 disc cd player remoted to garage and you can control it with a remote unit into a pair of 4 foot tall speakers.

Think its best to buy one of those newer units 5-1 with sub and put that out there.

Me all I have out in the garage is a portable radio to listen to a country music and ball games while I'm working, didn't get much done today had to fix the furnace in the house. Had a high heat limit switch stuck open for some odd reason.

No TV I would never get anything done. Just a portable radio dialed into country music.

I have a TV and receiver in my garage.  I'll usually use the TV if there is a race or sporting event on.  I also have my mp3 player hooked up to the speakers so I can get some commercial free music while I'm working.

No TV, just radio and CD built into my tool box.  Usually country, Oldie Goldie's if I can find the them, beach music and Southern Gospel from 10:00 until 2:00 on Saturday mornings.

I have a AM/FM, CD, stereo with a couple huge Fisher speakers mounted off the ceiling. I usually listen to an oldies station, or I'll pop in a Chicago or Beachboys CD. Most stereos have a volume knob that go up to ten, but mine goes up to 11  ;D (Spinaltap).

I asked this thinking that maybe a little company out there would help me to be as productive as some of you. Now I can see that by the time I get my sound system completed I could have the car done.  ::)

If you want to feel a bit nostalgic try listening to the Rock-A-Billy link on the home page while working on your hot rod.
